Autumn is the perfect time to prepare your home for winter before going into hibernation mode during those long, cold months. Keeping up with seasonal home maintenance is a smart move that will go a long way in avoiding costly repairs and damage to your home. Here’s a look at what you can take care of inside and outside the home this fall.
Schedule a furnace inspection. A licensed HVAC professional can check your furnace’s heating efficiency and test for leaks, preventing any cold mornings due to a furnace going kaput.
Change the batteries in your smoke detector. Fall is a great time to test all your home safety devices. Replace the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and check to make sure they’re in working order.
Check for Drafts. Feel for drafts coming in around windows and doors and take the time to replace window seals and replace caulking around windows and door frames.
Clean your gutters. Fall is the time to clear your home’s gutters of leaves, nests and debris and check for any leaks. Additionally, you’ll want to make sure rainwater downspouts are clear of obstructions so water can drain away from foundations, walkways and driveways.
Complete fall gardening tasks. Cut back bushes, shrubs and flowers, bring any flower pots inside, and plant bulbs for spring. Fall is also a perfect time to fertilize the lawn to prevent winter damage and spring weeds.
Turn off the water. Turn off outdoor faucets and drain garden hoses, then disconnect them from outside spigots. Store hoses in a warm place, such as the garage, so any residual water won’t freeze.
Inspect the roof. Perform a thorough inspection of your roof from top to bottom, looking for cracks in the shingles, missing or curled shingles, damage to metal flashing, or any wind damage. Staying ahead on roof maintenance will help avoid a leaky roof. Clear off any leaves or other debris if necessary.
Clear the deck. Bring any iron and wicker furniture as well as fabric pillows and slipcovers indoors for safekeeping. Sweep floors and clean railings, grills and outdoor furniture after a long season of use.
