HERS Energy Rating

Of all measures of quality, energy efficiency is one of the most telling. A home may look nice at first glance, but if the home builder didn’t put the time and energy into ensuring proper insulation, circulation, and more, then the consequences can mean higher energy costs for you and your family.

At Homewood Homes, we spare no effort to make sure that our homes are the most energy efficient on the market. That’s why we are proud to have such a high rating on the HERS Index, one of the most respected, official measurements of a home’s energy efficiency. Using high quality building materials, with an attention to detail informed by our industry’s best practices, we are able to ensure that our homes are efficient, cost effective, and environmentally friendly places to live.

What is HERS Index?

The Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Index is the industry standard measurement for home energy efficiency. It is a nationally recognized, and highly respected, system for investigating and measuring a home’s energy performance.

How does the HERS Index work?

All homes ranked under the HERS Index are investigated by Home Energy Raters, certified professionals who appraise a home’s energy efficiency, and tag it with a relative performance score. The lower the score, the more energy efficient the home is.

A home that is considered ‘energy efficient’ according to the 2004/2006 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) has a HERS Index Score of 100. This means homes with lower scores are more energy efficient, while those with higher scores are less efficient. According to the US Department of Energy, a typical home for resale averages a score of 130 on the HERS Index.

Homewood Homes Savings

Unlike typical resale homes, however, we are proud to note that the average HERS rating for a Homewood home is 60*! This high efficiency allows you and your family to save a good deal of money on energy costs, helping to offset the cost of your new home!

All scores lower than 100 represent significant energy efficiency, and even greater savings. If your new home has a rating of 60, for instance, you can save over $1100.00 a year on energy costs!

* HERS index scores vary by house plan.

All Homewood Homes are highly competitive in their HERS ratings, and have a number of unique features that ensure cutting edge efficiency compared with the market average:

  • Improved, Quality Insulation:  A home equipped with quality insulation, especially when that insulation has a higher R-value, will retain more heat in during the winter, and will let more heat out during the summer.
  • Air Sealing and Water Protection:  We make sure that all leaks, cracks, and gaps in our houses and around equipment are properly sealed, reducing drafts and energy bills.
  • ENERGY STAR® Qualified Appliances: ENERGY STAR products represent the highest standards in energy efficiency, and are made by leading manufacturers in the brands you value and trust. With ENERGY STAR options for refrigerators, clothes washers, dishwashers, and more, we make it easy to meet high energy efficiency standards in your home.
  • Duct System Sealing and Insulation: Reduce air loss by up to 20% with well-sealed and insulated duct systems, ensuring greater comfort and greater efficiency!
  • High Efficiency Heating Equipment: With proper sizing and installation, these models outshine standard units in both quality and efficiency.
  • ENERGY STAR® Qualified Lighting: ENERGY STAR light bulbs and fixture last up to 10 times longer than standard models, and use up to 2/3 less energy! Plus, they tend to produce more light than the average, non-ENERGY STAR bulb!
  • Mechanical Ventilation: Reduce moisture issues and indoor pollutants with quality mechanical ventilation, encouraging fresh air exchange, and making your home more livable.
