Our Top Tips For Organizing Your Home
Mar-19, 2019
As spring arrives, there is oftentimes a desire to declutter your home and become more organized. This Spring, there is an even stronger motivation driving people to clear out their closets, bookshelves, and desks … to find what sparks joy and, of course, discard that which does not. KonMari is an organizational method that focuses on mindfulness, introspection, and forward looking, while determining which items you will keep. While KonMari may not be the method of choice for everyone, most can agree that an organized home is more comfortable and can be a great way to head into Spring. Here are a few tips for taking home organization to a new level.
Organize the Heart of Your Home
It’s common to use your kitchen as a catch-all zone for all of that paperwork that comes into the house—and ultimately, needs to go back out. Take control of the constant flood of paperwork by creating an inbox for each parent and child. Children can place forms that need filled out or signed in Mom’s inbox, and they’ll find them in their inbox when they’re ready. And be sure to sort those random papers, carryout menus, and receipts into their own folders and not stuffed into a junk drawer.
Clean Out the Refrigerator
An organized refrigerator can make your daily cooking chores much less stressful, and can make finding a healthy snack a little easier. Clean out expired condiments, forgotten leftovers, and not-so-fresh produce, and consider adding clear bins to make the best use of your refrigerator space. Post a list on or near the refrigerator where the whole family can help keep up the next week’s shopping list and meal ideas.
Maximize Your Cabinets
Whether it is planning where you will keep canned and boxed goods, or finding the perfect spot for your pots and pans, deciding how to organize your kitchen cabinets can be overwhelming. The cardinal rule is to to group like items with like items. Dedicate certain shelving areas to canned and boxed goods, fill pull-out bins with dry goods, and display
spices on easy-to-navigate racks. And make cooking easier by keeping pans, measuring cups, and utensils that are frequently used close to your cooking space for easy access.
Keep Your Closets in Season
While it’s up to you if you ask if each item of clothing sparks joy, you should take everything out of your closet and decide what you will keep, what needs altered, and what should be donated. Once you decide what to keep, organize your closet by packing away seasonal items, while hanging tried and true outfits together and sorted by colors and items. The same philosophy applies to your linen closets—discard those towels and sheet sets that have seen better days or that you no longer use, cut them up to be used as rags, or look into donating them to your local animal shelter.
